MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENT TRAVELS TO WASHINGTON, D.C.

Alexis Howard, a student at Jordan Middle School, has been accepted into the People to People World Leadership Forum.

Alexis will join a select group of students from April 16 to 22 in Washington, D.C., to earn high school credit while studying leadership and exploring of the United States' most prominent monuments and institutions.

From Capitol Hill to the Smithsonian Institution and from Colonial Williamsburg to the National Museum of American History, Alexis will examine the characteristics of American leadership during times of national challenge and prosperity.

COUPLE CELEBRATES 70TH WEDDING ANNIVERSARY

Charles and Thelma Wallen celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary on Friday.

They first became residents of Burbank when they bought their home in 1949. They continue to live in the same home today.

The couple are in their 90s and enjoy watching television and reading the Burbank Leader and the Los Angeles Times.

ARMY PRIVATE GRADUATES FROM BASIC TRAINING

Army National Guard Pvt. Lauren Lachica has graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C.

During the nine weeks of training, the soldier studied the Army mission, history, tradition and core values and physical fitness. She also received instruction and practice in basic combat skills, military weapons, chemical warfare and bayonet training, drill and ceremony, marching, rifle marksmanship, armed and unarmed combat, map reading, field tactics, military courtesy, military justice system, basic first aid, foot marches and field training exercises.

She is the daughter of Gerardo Lachica, of Glendale, and Marilou Thomas, of Burbank.

Lachica is a 2005 graduate of Burbank High School.
