SPORTS ROUNDUP:Guards earn first rival win in 10 years

BOYS' VOLLEYBALL

Bellarmine-Jefferson d. Providence, 23-25, 25-15, 25-20, 25-22: The Guards defeated the visiting Pioneers for the first time in a decade Thursday in a nonleague match.

"After we lost that first game the guys woke up and just started playing," said Bell-Jeff Coach Miguel Segura, whose team is 16-7. "When they did that they started playing good volleyball."

Bell-Jeff was paced by Ramy Garsdean, who had 12 kills and eight blocks and Chris Lopez, who had six kills and 11 blocks.

BOYS' GOLF

CIF Southern Section Boys' Freelance Golf Tournament: Senior Vittavat Klinmalai played well in the event Tuesday and qualified for the CIF Southern Section Northern Individual Regionals on May 14 at the Sterling Hills Country Club in Camarillo.

He is the first golfer from the school to qualify for postseason competition.

The Guards — who don't compete in a league — had Klinmalai and Antres Hindoyan qualify for the freelance event at the Rio Hondo Country Club in Downey. Klinmalai played well, shooting a 79 — seven over par — over 18 holes. Hindoyan shot a 95.

"Vittavat is playing very well right now," Bell-Jeff Coach Rolando Aguirre said. "We are hoping he is going to be able to advance."

Pacific League preliminaries, finals: Burroughs finished third and Burbank was fourth Tuesday in the final league match at Wilson Golf Course.

Despite placing second Tuesday, Crescenta Valley finished first in league with 19 points. Arcadia (16) was second, followed by the Indians (10) and the Bulldogs (five).

The Falcons' Justin Yu was the low medalist of the quad-match, firing a two-under-par 70.

Chase Dontanville shot a 73, Kevin Crawford had a 75, Troy Fleiner had a 78, Peter Romero and Marlon Jimenez had 84s and Ryan Naccarato had a 92 for Burroughs.

For Burbank, Matt Kurihara had an 82, Jin Park had a 90, Justin Noll had a 95, Walter Cohen and Matt Noll had 98s and Justin Gillett had a 99.

The teams took part in the finals Wednesday at Harding Golf Course.

Yu shot rounds of 70 and 72 on the par-72 course to earn the league's top individual honor with a 142 total. Arcadia's James Moseley (72-73 — 145) was second and teammate Cyrus Wu (73-75 — 148) was third.

The top local finisher was Dontanville (73-77 — 150) who placed sixth after a card-off. Crawford (75-76) carded a 151, Kurihara (82-78) had a 160, Fleiner (78-85) had a 163, Romero (84-82) had a 166 and Jimenez (84-89) had a 173.
