In 1957, longtime Burbank resident Zeola Feuerhelm was just turning 50. That same year, the Burbank-Valley Garden Club was established. Club members recently staged a bloomin' good time, tipping their hats to themselves as they hit the half-century mark, and to Zeola as she gears up to celebrate her 100th birthday.

The organization that promotes gardening knowledge, participation in environmental projects and the encouragement of youth gardening, celebrated its 50th anniversary on April 28 at North Hollywood's Campo de Cahuenga. This historic facility was the site of the signing of the Treaty of Cahuenga in January 1847 that was instrumental in ending the conflict between the United States and Mexico over the Southwest Territory.

Following the event's opening ceremonies that included the awarding of a commendation by Los Angeles City Councilman Tom LaBonge, organization members and friends enjoyed a day of entertainment provided by the John Burroughs High School Dance Assn. Under the direction of Marilyn Suleiman, the assemblage was treated to four recitals performed by Kate Krantz, Bryan Setzer, Jacqueline Hausfeld, Lauren Malouf, Angelina Badalian, Alina Cardenas, Deanne Douglas, Chanel Stewart, Jhanel Steward, Tania Corte, Brittney Hoover and Lauren Morales.

Zahava Zirinsky, who serves as the club's president, presided over the celebration and presented a certificate of special recognition to Margie Vierra for her many years of dedicated commitment to the group's success. In turn, Vierra honored longtime members Winifred Arnold, Jean Askeland, Zeola Feuerhelm and Barbara Smith.

Special guests attending were Elisabeth Tufo, president of the California Garden Clubs Inc.; Beverly Brune, regional director of the Pacific Region of Garden Clubs Inc.; and Mary Waddington-Merritt, a past president of the Burbank-Valley Garden Club, who served as mistress of ceremonies. Also on hand were Grace Davis, Mary Huff, Doris Rush, Kari Torres, Hannah Rivera, Anna Norwalt, and Barbara, Jane and Dorothy Feuerhelm.

Celebrations continued this past Sunday as Burbank's Temple Emanu El marked its 60th anniversary with a festive evening of dining and dancing. The Castaway's Mountain View Room served as the venue for the event that also paid special tribute to Ira and Tobi Lippman. Ira and Toby, along with their three boys, Harrison, Eli and Max, represent the second and third generation of the family's service to the temple.
