BURBANK — Two Burbank Police officers escaped with minor injuries early Sunday morning, when their vehicle flipped over during a high-speed chase.

The officers, whose names were not released, were traveling on Victory Place north of Lake Street at about 1:30 a.m., in response to a call for back-up in the pursuit of an alleged stolen vehicle, Burbank Lt. Ron Caruso said.

As the officer driving negotiated a curve in the roadway, he encountered another vehicle heading toward him and, swerving to avoid it, lost control of the squad car, Caruso said.

The car struck a curb, a parkway tree and a street light before it overturned, he said.

"No other vehicles were involved in the collision with the police vehicle," he said.

Officials have not confirmed how fast the car was going at the time of the accident, but it was traveling at a high rate of speed, Caruso said.

"The unit that crashed was not directly engaged in the chase; they were not far from it and were attempting to catch up to it," he said.

"It was within their sight, but they weren't close enough yet to really call themselves part of the chase."

The officers were taken to Providence St. Joseph Medical Center, treated for their injuries and released, said Burbank Police Lt. Omar Rodriguez.

"They were just taken there as a precautionary measure," he said.

Other officers involved in the chase arrested Damian Brown, a 37-year-old Sacramento man, after he turned into a driveway and collided with a parked car during the police pursuit and fled the scene on foot, Rodriguez said.

When officers caught up with Brown, there was a brief confrontation and struggle before the arrest, Caruso said.

"The driver of the vehicle bailed out of his car and he ran," Rodriguez said.

"Officers chased him and caught him and brought him into custody."

Brown was charged with felony evasion of police, resisting arrest, assault on an officer, leaving the scene of an accident and auto theft, Caruso said.

He was booked at the Burbank Jail, in lieu of $75,000 bail, he added.

Investigators are still looking into what precipitated the officer-involved collision occurred, he said.

"The investigation into this collision is on-going, so determinations relative to the cause are still pending," he said.
