Performers sang, danced and told off-color, sometimes sexually suggestive jokes, but the cheekiest performance came from Joyce Shelli Bergloff and Vicki Burch — also known as Crumpet & Strumpet — who sang "You Must Have Been a Beautiful Baby."
"Good gracious," Elsie Richardson, of Burbank, said when Bergloff and Burch began to make their way toward the stage. The duo were wearing matching short, polka-dot dresses and curly wigs, a la Shirley Temple.
"Oh Lord," Richardson said and chuckled, shaking her head.
They got on stage and sang their song a cappella, swaying from side to side and leaning their heads together while they harmonized.
When they delivered the line "You must have took a beautiful bow," they turned their backs to audience and lifted their skirts to reveal ruffle-seat panties, much to the audience's audible surprise and amusement.
After they finished, they received a rousing applause. The entire show was tongue-in-cheek. Magician Carl Ballantine did a magic trick that involved taking a dollar bill from a stranger in the crowd and burning it, and then giving him an I.O.U. for the money.
The man was then instructed to collect on the note "after the show, in the lobby," Ballantine said.
Show hostess Marie Burnett joked about her age when singer Tom Thomas lugged a chair up some stairs saying she has frequently hurt her back trying to move furniture.
"My back goes out more than I do," Burnett said.
But it wasn't all jokes. Robles said she appreciated the talent of the performers and was pleased with their song selections. While Thomas sang "I've Heard That Song Before," Robles swayed along with the melody and smiled.
"What a beautiful voice he has," Robles said. "No young kids sing like this, I'm telling you."
