Bits and pieces from the local sports scene:

The veteran infielder, along with closer Byung Hyun Kim, were picked up on waivers by the Arizona Diamondbacks, who are in first place in the National League West.

The 37-year-old Cirillo was hitting .261 with nine doubles, two homers and 21 runs batted in 50 games for the Minnesota Twins while playing first and third base, as well as some time as designated hitter.

Cirillo began his Major League career with the Brewers in 1994. In 1,589 career Major League at-bats he has a composite .297 batting average.

To make room for Cirillo and Kim, the D-backs transferred Randy Johnson from the 15 to 60-day disabled list and designated minor-league infielder Brian Barden for assignment. The Diamondbacks have 10 days to either trade or waive Barden.

Jarrod Przebieda and water polo team take part in premier event: Jarrod Przebieda didn't stop playing water after he graduated from Burroughs in June.

The polo and swimming star has been playing for the Rose Bowl Aquatics team, which has enjoyed success recently.

Last week, the team was one of 48 boys' 18-and-under squads that took part in the S & R Sports 2007 Boys' Junior Olympics in San Jose and Cupertino.

Rose Bowl placed 12th, going 4-4 during the four-day competition that concluded Tuesday. Along with wins against Marin, 7-3, Champ Blue, 10-5, Stanford White, 7-4, and Honolulu, 18-1, the team lost to Chehalem, 8-3, VC Premier, 12-4, Stanford Red, 15-4, and Windansea, 14-13, in a shootout.

Przebieda has been practicing with the Rose Bowl team since October. He was the Indians' leading scorer as a senior in water polo, tallying more than 70 goals and pacing Burroughs to the postseason.

In swimming, he tied for the Pacific League championship in the 50-yard freestyle.
