Football Previewinside Info

September 15, 2007

• WHEN: 1:30 p.m. today.

• WHERE: Maranatha High.

• RECORDS: The Guards are 2-0; the Rebels are 1-0.

• LAST WEEK: Bell-Jeff defeated Mountain View, 42-16; Flintridge Prep defeated Malibu, 10-0.

• OUTLOOK: The nonleague game figures to be a defensive battle between the teams. Last week, the Rebels limited Malibu to just 177 yards of total offense and had two key fourth-down stops to halt drives by the Sharks. Coincidently, the Bell-Jeff defense had its share of fourth-down stops in its win last week on the road. The Bell-Jeff defense is giving up an average of just 12 points a game. The squads are also similar in the fact that they like to run the ball. The Guards counter with All-CIF Southern Section running back Jorge Chaidez, who has been almost unstoppable in the team’s first two games. Chaidez has gained 413 yards and has four touchdowns. Along with Chaidez, the Guards also have accomplished running backs in Bronson Ketchum and Eric Ruelas, who both scored two touchdowns against Mountain View. Flintridge Prep showed it likes to keep the ball on the ground in last week’s win. The Rebels used a host of running backs — Ian Sander (59 yards in 10 carries), Joel Bryant (54 yards in 12 carries), Adam Ross (40 yards in 10 carries) and Gavin Thomson (25 yards in three carries) — to gain the win. Rebels quarterback Gus Herrera completed just one of four passes for 16 yards, an interception and no touchdowns against Malibu. The Guards weren’t able to do much in the passing department last week as well, completing one pass with an interception and no TDs.
