The district event is scheduled for Dec. 1 at Van Nuys High. Winners continue on to regional, state and ultimately the national event.

The program offers kids 8-13 the opportunity for skill development, social relationships and athletic competition.

More than three million youngsters from throughout the country entered last year’s competition for boys and girls in age categories 8-9, 10-11 and 12-13.

Each contestant has 25 shots at the hoop.

Names of the national winners will be inscribed on the Elks National Hoop Shoot plaque on permanent display in the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, Mass.

Burbank resident Ian Wilson, a senior at Dartmouth College, was named Ivy League defensive Player of the Week for his play against Pennsylvania last week.

In his first three games of the season, Wilson — a senior safety who played at Loyola High — had 32 tackles, two interceptions, broke up two passes and forced two fumbles.

Heading into today’s nonconference game against Holy Cross, the Big Green was 1-3.

A group of former local standout cross-country runners had some fine results at recent meets.

On Oct. 6 at the Triton Cross-Country Classic in San Diego, former Burroughs star Daniel Anderson (UC San Diego) placed seventh in 33 minutes 50 seconds in the men’s 10 kilometers. In the same race, Bellarmine-Jefferson grad Gerard Herkey (USC) placed 52nd (36:27).

Former Indian Michelle Martinez (San Diego State) finished 50th (24:49) in the women’s race over six kilometers.
