Burbank City Council Meeting Preview

January 12, 2008

ON THE AGENDA

The following items will be discussed at Tuesday’s Burbank City Council meeting:

The council will hold a joint public hearing with the Redevelopment Agency Board regarding the Peyton-Grismer revitalization project.

In 2003, the council approved $13 million in funding to revitalize a number of deteriorating apartment buildings in the Peyton-Grismer area in northeast Burbank. On Tuesday, the council will consider a request from the Redevelopment Agency for about $2.8 million more to complete the revitalization and an agreement between the agency and KSD Group Inc. to oversee construction management.

WHAT TO EXPECT

Staffers are asking the council to approve the funding and the sales agreement between KSD and the Redevelopment Agency.

The council will consider approving a state grant of more than $33,000 for the sobriety checkpoint program, which the city runs in conjunction with the California Highway Patrol to reduce the number of alcohol-related car crashes during certain holidays.

WHAT TO EXPECT

The council will approve the funds.

In response to Councilman Dave Golonski’s request, city staffers will present a report detailing the possibility of creating an incentive program meant to entice a private party to install an E85 fueling facility in Burbank.

E85 is an alternative to fossil fuel that is made of 85% ethanol, which is alcohol distilled from fermented mashed grain and 15% gasoline. It can be used only in Flexible Fuel Vehicles. There are six E85 fueling stations in California and about 338,000 registered Flexible Fuel Vehicles in the state.

WHAT TO EXPECT

Staff is seeking direction on the matter.

The council will consider funding options for the winter homeless shelter in Burbank.

At the Dec. 4 council meeting, Golonski pledged $20,000 in Burbank funds if Glendale matched its donation. But no money has been received by Union Rescue Mission, operators of the shelter, who said they are running a $49,000 deficit.

The shelter is due to close March 15, but rescue mission officials said they might be forced to close their doors two weeks early if the money is not received.

WHAT TO EXPECT

Staffers are seeking direction on the matter.
