TRACK AND FIELD: Burbank and Burroughs athletes qualify for final league competition.

April 30, 2008|By Jeff Tully

BURBANK — It was a rare occurrence for the Pacific League track and field athletes to meet on a weekend for the league preliminaries.

But there they were Saturday, taking part in the event at Arcadia High.

Burroughs High led the way for the locals, as 15 Indians athletes qualified for Friday’s league finals at Arcadia. Burbank will have four athletes in the finals.

“The kids competed very well on Saturday,” Burroughs Coach John Peebles said. “Even those who didn’t qualify for the finals gave it their all.”

On the girls’ side, four Burroughs athletes qualified in two events. Taryn Campos moved on in the 200 meters (25.44 seconds) and the 400 (58.97), as did Sadee Martinez in the 800 (2:19) and the 1,600 (5:10), Daniela Salinas in the 400 (1:03.15) and the 300 hurdles (49.95) and Lauren Andrade in the 800 (2:25) and the 1,600 (5:15).

Other female qualifiers were: Shannon Kermah in the 100 (13.54), Jackie Miller in the 100 (13.52), Nicole Molin in the 400 (1:01.15), Carolyn Meisner in the 100 hurdles (18.32) and Veronica Eyo in the 300 hurdles (50.43).

The Indians also had four double qualifiers on the boys’ side. Charles Barrett advanced in the 100 (11.42) and the 200 (23.05), Chris Morris advanced in the 200 (22.69) and the 400 (49.27), Jonathan Alpizar advanced in the 800 (2:02) and the 1,600 (4:26) and Hector Carrillo advanced in the 110 hurdles (16.49) and the 300 hurdles (41.67).

Teammate Dustin Blankenship qualified in the 800 as well (2:02), and Richard Folk made it in the 110 hurdles (16.61).

For Burbank, Izzy Soto moves on in the 200 (23.51), as does Greg Dotson (1:59), Ryan Williams (2:03) and Adib Younan (2:03) in the 800.

“We are scratching Ryan from the 800 so he can be fresh for the 3,200,” Burbank Coach Darin Wolf said. “That’s his bread-and-butter event and we think he has a real good chance to advance [to the CIF prelims].”

All relays, field events and the 3,200 will be contested in the finals. On Friday, field events will begin at 4 p.m. and running events will start at 5.

“We expect our athletes to go out and compete to the best of their abilities in the finals,” Peebles said.
