Bellarmine-Jefferson 25, Lake Arrowhead Christian 1: The Guards move on to the second round of the CIF Southern Section Division VII playoffs for the second year in a row by winning their first-round game Friday on the road.

Sarah Salgado came up with a grand slam in the first inning to give Bell-Jeff (8-8) an early lead. The team scored 11 runs in the inning.

“We are excited about being in the second round for the second year in a row,” Bell-Jeff Coach Patty Bertole said. “It was a good win for us.”

The Guards will take on Baptist Christian at 3:15 p.m. Tuesday in a second-round game at home.

Baptist Christian (15-5) — the Victory League champion — defeated Santa Clarita Christian, 3-1, Tuesday in a first-round contest.

Taylor Nelson and Ivanna Contreras were both four for five for Bell-Jeff.

Pitcher Shelby Ingram got the win for the Guards.

“We knew when we were watching them warm up that they were having their problems,” Bertole said. “But we just wanted to work on our game to be ready for the next round.

“We realize that things are going to get a lot harder in the next round.”

The Guards qualified for the playoffs by finishing third in the Santa Cruz League.

Providence 16, Costal Christian 2: Pitcher Bronwyn Stewart tossed a two-hitter and Sarah Lohman had a big day at the plate Tuesday to pace the Pioneers to a win in the first round of the CIF Southern Section Division VII playoffs on the road.

Stewart, a freshman, struck out six, walked five and scattered the two hits in a complete-game effort. Only one of the runs she surrendered was earned.

Lohman, a senior, reached base all five times she came to the plate, going four for five with three runs scored and four stolen bases.”

“I think we’re ready for the next round,” said Gibson, whose team improved to 11-7.
