CEMETERY IS TOPIC FOR GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY

May Lou Pozzo, author, retired law librarian and caretaker of the Verdugo Hills Cemetery, will be the speaker during the next meeting of the Immigrant Genealogical Society at 2 p.m. June 8 at the headquarters, 1310 W. Magnolia Blvd., Burbank.

She will tell the story of the great flood of 1978 and the struggle to preserve the site.

CHURCH SEEKS ENTRANTS FOR CHILI COOK-OFF

The First Presbyterian Church of Burbank will have its first Chili Cook-off and Music Festival from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. June 7 in the church parking lot, 521 E. Olive Ave., Burbank.

The entry fee is $3, said organizer Ann-Marie Murrell. For more information, call her at the church, (818) 842-5103.

The food categories for judging are chili with beans, chili without beans, exotic chili, side dishes and desserts. Food sampling and hot dogs will be available to the public after judging.

The event will feature a variety of contemporary Christian musical acts performing throughout the day, including the band Breathing Room.

MEETING TOPIC IS SERVICES FOR DISABLED

AARP West Glendale Chapter 1886 will meet at 1 p.m. June 9 in the Carlson Fellowship Center of the First United Methodist Church, 130 N. Kenwood St., Glendale.

Chapter members live in the Burbank and Glendale areas.

The meeting features an explanation of the services for the developmentally disabled given by Gail Marko of the Glendale Assn. of Retarded. Admission and refreshments are free.

SCREENWRITER, PRODUCER VISITS GROUP

Members of the Alameda Writers Group interview humor author, screenwriter and producer Eric Garcia at their monthly meeting at 10 a.m. June 7 at the Glendale Central Library, 222 E. Harvard St., Glendale.

Admission is free, and the library validates parking in the Good Guys parking structure at Harvard and Maryland.

Best known for his novels “Anonymous Rex,” “Casual Rex” and others, Garcia’s “Matchstick Men” was made into a 2003 film directed by Ridley Scott and starring Nicolas Cage.

Garcia will discuss his writer’s journey and the various roles he has played in Hollywood.

Five Acres “Swingin’ on a Star — Creole-style” benefit has a new attraction this year to its June 8 gala at One Colorado.

Members have placed auction items online to allow for an early opportunity to bid on vacations, merchandise and memorabilia prior to the event.
