Burbank Unified School District Board Special Meeting Preview

Lori-Ordway Peck, assistant superintendent of Business Services, will ask the board to adopt an emergency resolution to waive the requirement for competitive bidding for upgrades to electrical power at John Muir Middle School. The work is estimated to cost $200,000.

The work needs to be completed because the electrical capacity at the school is old and requires renovation, Ordway-Peck said. If approved, the district will install a whole new electrical panel in the school.

WHAT TO EXPECT

The board will likely approve the resolution and allocate $200,000 to pay for the necessary electrical upgrades, Ordway-Peck said.

Deputy Supt. Joel Shapiro will make a recommendation to the board to approve the California Department of Education 2008-09 Gifted and Talented Education Program application.

The program provides funding for school districts to offer classes for high-achieving and underachieving students who have been identified as gifted or talented.

The program was started five years ago in the Burbank School District and needs to be renewed by the board in order to continue.

WHAT TO EXPECT

The board is expected to approve the application. When approved, the California Board of Education will decide whether to renew the program for a one-, two- or three-year period.
