Dining Out:

Lancers is the place for home style

The classic home-style cooking is served at dinner. Skip the diet plates, save salad night for another evening, because Lancers is all about comfort food. The fried chicken is served golden brown with moist chicken covered in a crunchy, perfect crust. The baked meatloaf is tender and better than anything your mom ever made. The seasoned sauce over the baked chicken is definitely reminiscent of Sunday dinners at Nana’s house.

I have two favorite dinners. The first is the chicken-fried steak smothered in a creamy white gravy. The seasonings were just perfect, and the steak itself was fork-tender. Order it with mashed potatoes so you don’t miss a drop of that country gravy.

The turkey dinner turns an ordinary June evening into something the pilgrims would have been proud to celebrate. The oven-roasted turkey is moist and tender. The mashed potatoes, gravy and cranberry sauce are superb, but it is the corn bread stuffing that makes you sit back and close your eyes. The bits of cranberries and apples and the rich taste of the corn bread makes an ideal Thanksgiving in June.

At least our nation’s presidents have gotten one thing right over the years. When it comes to real comfort food, nothing can beat American home-style cooking. Of course, that’s something the folks at Lancers in Burbank have always known.
