High schools to host an alumni picnic

The eighth annual Burbank High School and John Burroughs High School alumni picnic is 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. today at Johnny Carson Park at 400 S. Bob Hope Drive in Burbank.

The event will include an alumni classic car show and a giveaway of door prizes.

Guests are invited to bring picnic chairs and blankets.

A $2 donation will be collected. The proceeds will benefit the park.

Club brings in children’s books

The Rotary Club of Burbank Sunrise raised more than 1,000 children’s books for the Rotary International Convention on June 15 to 18.

The books were gathered for the Wide World of Books project, a book drive sponsored by Rotary International and the Los Angeles Times’ Reading by 9 program. Nearly 243,000 books have been gathered during the drive.

The books will be donated to public school students in grades kindergarten through third throughout the region.

Polo group has anniversary events

The Los Angeles Equestrian Center Polo celebrates its 25th anniversary on Saturday with two polo matches.

A celebrity polo match sponsored by Harry Winston will be at 7 p.m. and feature past celebrity players such as Bill Devane and Alex Cord. A match will follow at 8:30 p.m.

The Los Angeles Equestrian Center Polo School has taught more than 1,000 polo players in the last 25 years and has attracted a fan base of 10,000.

Tickets are $50 for center box seats, $35 for outer box seats and $10 for general admission.
