Burbank children deserve better

I was happy to see that Scott Bailey from Burroughs High School got a better job at a high school in Los Angeles (“Drama teacher is leaving Burroughs,” July 12).

In my more than 30 years of being a close Burbank Unified School District watcher, he seems to be about the 20th teacher who has gotten unfairly singled out by the district.

Most of them went on to great acclaim elsewhere.

Until Burbank residents start making better hiring decisions of our management staff, we truly deserve to be an object of ridicule.

But it’s the kids who lose out.

Traffic system a worthy investment

Why is Burbank not investing in a synchronized system?

Traffic lights that are not synchronized result in excessive engine idle time at red lights. This results in reduced fuel efficiency, increased automotive emissions and reduced worker productivity because of longer commuting times.

Synchronized traffic lights can help reduce driving time and vehicle emissions and increase fuel economy.

With Burbank becoming more congested and traffic volume going up, they should spearhead a synchronized traffic light project and ease the drive time in Burbank and be more eco-friendly.

Start breaking ground Burbank, and stop being the follower with modernization.

Race car practice on local freeways

I’m a retired senior citizen. Occasionally, I have to get on the freeway to go on an errand. What an experience.

The speed limit is 70 mph, but 50 percent or more of the drivers are doing more than 70 mph.

Maybe I missed something. Maybe there is no speed limit.

Not only that, cars cut in front of you and come up from behind you.

This has been going on for years, but not as flagrant as now. It must be something in the water.

But where is the California Highway Patrol? I never see them on my occasional freeway trips.

The ad on the radio promoting their occupation sounds like they are very well paid. So where are they?

I think I got it.

Professional race car drivers practice on our freeways.

Murphy should run again for council

I was moved by Tim Murphy’s letter (“NBC development plans make little sense,” Mailbag, July 5) decrying the overdevelopment of our city. The past few years have seen several such projects.

Magically, they slip through the system and get shoved down our throats before we know it, degrading our quality of life, overloading our infrastructure and gridlocking our streets.

And for what end? To seemingly benefit a few corporations that couldn’t care less about the air we breathe or the overflow they create.

It sure would be nice to have a City Council member with some gumption, someone who would speak up against the deep pockets who play this town like a video game. But what did we do last election? Not much.

Hey, what an amazing coincidence — didn’t we once actually have a council member named Tim Murphy?

As I recall, he had some pretty respectable credentials, too — an Los Angeles Superior Court commissioner, a pillar of the community and a reputation of unimpeachable integrity.

Only problem was, he couldn’t stick it out and bailed.

We sure could use a guy like that again.
