BURBANK HIGH — For the second straight season, the Burbank High girls’ tennis team made it to the CIF Southern Section Division II playoffs.

And for the second straight year, the Bulldogs were victorious in their opener.

Burbank easily defeated visiting Westridge on Tuesday, 14-4, in a wild-card contest.

Bulldogs Coach Loi Phan doesn’t discount his team’s playoff wins, even though they came in the wild-card round.

“Hey, a win’s a win,” said Phan, whose team is 10-6. “We can say that we have playoff wins.”

The win puts the Bulldogs into a first-round match at 2 p.m. Thursday against host Santa Barbara. The Dons (13-4) are the No. 1 seed and champions of the Channel League.

“That’s our reward for winning, we get to play Santa Barbara,” Phan said.

Phan, whose team finished fourth in the Pacific League, said the key to Tuesday’s victory was the play of his doubles.

“I told them if the doubles can win five [sets], we win the match,” Phan said.

The doubles won seven, led by the No. 1 team of Victoria Magrini and Jennie Kim, which won, 7-5, 6-4, 6-2, and the No. 2 duo of Alice Karaian and Emily Yun, which swept by 6-2 scores.

The team of Saniya Ibrahim and Sun-Mo Koo won one, 4-6, 5-7, 6-3.

The singles were paced by No. 1 Tatevik Harutyunian, who beat her Westridge (8-7) opponents, 6-0, 6-1, 6-0. Lita Patel, at No. 2, went, 6-2, 0-6, 6-0, and Julie Kim went, 6-3, 5-7, 6-2.
