HOLIDAY BASKETS FILLED FOR NEEDY FAMILIES

Burbank Coordinating Council is organizing its Holiday Baskets program for needy families. Anyone can come and help with the delivery and packing of baskets from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. today in the lunch shelter of Washington Elementary School, 2322 N. Lincoln St., Burbank.

Every year the council serves nearly 500 low-income families and provides food and gifts through the efforts of community donors from organizations, individuals, city offices, churches, schools and local businesses. The council works along with the Salvation Army Burbank Corps and Burbank Temporary Aid Center to prevent duplication of deliveries.

SALVATION ARMY TAKING DONATIONS FOR NEEDY

The Salvation Army, Burbank Corps needs volunteer “Angels” to help with the Angel Tree project in the Burbank Town Center.

Longtime volunteers Cookie Bentivegna and Barbara Marks have been Angels for the past 11 years.

A Christmas Tree is placed in the Burbank Town Center, on the third floor by Border Books and Mervyn’s.

People can stop by from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily until Dec. 23.

Two volunteers are assigned two-hour shifts sitting at the tree. Cardboard angel tags with the first name, sizes, age and Christmas wish of the child are hung on the tree.

The donor picks a child’s name and purchases a gift. The tag and gift are returned to the tree location, unwrapped, to be given to the proper child. Christmas boxes and gifts are distributed to the family during Christmas week.

More than 1,500 children and their families had a merrier Christmas last year through the efforts of local volunteers and the community.

To volunteer for the Angel Tree project, call Elaine Paonessa at (818) 845-6851.

The Salvation Army is also in need of can goods and nonperishable items to meet the growing needs of the community. Already, 350 families have signed up for Holiday Food Boxes and Toys to be distributed from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Dec. 22.

Anyone wishing to donate food or toys, or to contribute financially, may do so by calling (818) 845-7214 or by stopping by the Salvation Army, Burbank Corps., 300 E Angeleno Ave., Burbank.
