At Sheridan Gardens, six Christmas-themed flags line the store’s front windows. Lights bedecking Christmas trees inside sparkle brightly from the outside on Hollywood Way.
“It looks so cute at night,” said gift shop manager Chris Van Deusen, who entered the shop in the contest.
Contest or no contest, employees at Sheridan Gardens always decorate for the holidays, Van Deusen said.
“[We decorate] so the people of Burbank can get in the festive mood,” she said.
Six Burbank residents won for their festive light displays sprawled out on front lawns from as far as Orange Grove Avenue to California Street .
Off of Buena Vista Street, the Boys and Girls Club of Burbank won the youth award for its kid-created outdoor display. A single wreath enshrouded by lights hangs from the side of the building, and the building’s flag pole was converted into a Christmas tree with lights. Decorations were hung earlier this month by volunteers and about 10 young members of the organization.
“I think it’s great to get the kids involved,” Program Director Brittany Vaughn said.
This year was the first time the organization applied for the contest.
“I think they’ll definitely be proud that they won,” Vaughn said.
Shelley Davies, vice chairwoman of the Civic Pride Committee, said the pool of applicants this year was more varied than usual.
“Over the years, we see the same houses beautifully decorated, and they weren’t on the list this year,” she said. “There were a lot of new ones.”
Holiday creations were scored by nine members and tallied to determine the winners.
“The committee feels [the contest] is a great source of civic pride. You feel good about living in a city that has a hometown feel,” said Cinda Cates, the city’s interim public information officer.
