Burbank Unified School District Board Of Education Meeting Wrap-up

$100,000 GIFT

The Burbank Healthcare Foundation presented a $100,000 gift to the Burbank Unified School District Board of Education in support of joint projects with the city to renovate fields at Burbank and John Burroughs high schools.

WHAT IT MEANS

The gift is the first half of a $200,000 pledge that the foundation will contribute toward the field renovation projects.

LOWER FEES FOR NONPROFITS

The board unanimously approved a dramatic fee reduction for nonprofit organizations that rent school facilities to allow booster groups and other organizations to save money in light of the difficult economic conditions.

WHAT IT MEANS

Nonprofits will pay about half the amount of normal clients using school facilities. The district could not calculate what the fiscal impact of the change would be as usage of its facilities were unpredictable.

FITNESSGRAM RESULTS

The district outperformed state averages on the Physical Fitness Test in almost every category, with 41.2% of Burbank ninth-graders earning a perfect score on the exam compared with 35.6% of the ninth-graders statewide. Students had to succeed in five out of six tests to pass the exam. Categories included aerobic capacity, body composition, abdominal strength, trunk extension, upper-body strength and flexibility.

WHAT IT MEANS

The district has improved its scores over the last three years, with 72.4% of ninth-graders passing the exam this year, compared with 66.3% last year and 54.6% in 2006.
