Dining Out:

Simply the best place for quiche

January 03, 2009|By Christine Putnam

The holidays are over. The fruit cake has been used to fill in that missing brick in the wall in the backyard. You dropped off those visiting in-laws at the airport this morning. The decorations are back in the garage. The new year has started, and you are pricing treadmills and rethinking those last few cookies.

Now that you finally have a chance to take a deep breath and relax, why not sit back and enjoy a hot cup of coffee in a quaint, French café in Burbank?

Simply Coffee is tucked away in Magnolia Park right off the boulevard, but don’t worry about missing it. The oversized cup of coffee on the marquee outside will draw you in just as the aroma of fresh-brewed coffee hits your nose.

An added bonus is the street parking right outside the door, which is ideal for grabbing a latte or cup of coffee and pastry on the go. Oh yeah, that New Year’s resolution — better make that a nonfat latte and energy bar on the go.

After the annual holiday rush, panic, chaos and exhaustion, my mom and I decided to put off diet plans and escape the cold outside (and the in-laws inside). We took a break at Simply Coffee. From the moment you step inside, the shabby chic décor makes you feel as comfortable as walking into your favorite great aunt’s house.

We glanced at the coffee menu board on the wall above the counter, but our eyes soon fell upon our real interest — the glass display down below holding the slices of freshly made quiche.

Quiche is a tart with an egg filling and a variety of other ingredients including vegetables, cheeses and meat. Popular quiches include fillings made with spinach, mushrooms, leeks, broccoli, cheese, sausage and ham. The dish originated in France.

It was no surprise then to learn that Simply Coffee is owned by a couple with French roots. They make the quiches daily using the freshest of ingredients.

My mom and I loved the spinach quiche and the mushroom and leek quiche. The portions were generous, served hot and very reasonable at $6.45 each. What made it perfect was the delicious, flaky crust that melts in your mouth. I would have liked a piece of fruit on the side, a few strawberries, grapes or, at the very least, a slice of orange to clean the palate.

Simply Coffee also has a few pastries, energy bars, granola, cookies and a limited choice of sandwiches. The coffee menu has all of the classic lattes, blended drinks and other favorites. Their mocha latte is a definite standout from the crowd.

With two large cups of coffee, we had a wonderful, post-holiday treat. As I finished my last sip of coffee, I could not help but remember that line President Teddy Roosevelt once gave after enjoying an after-dinner coffee with friends.

A true coffee connoisseur, Roosevelt took his last sip, sighed and said, “Good to the last drop.” At Simply Coffee, you can also add good to the last bite.
