Burbank Coach Loi Phan was pleased with the way his squad bounced back after a 3-2 league loss Wednesday against Arcadia — a contest the Bulldogs (9-4, 3-1 in league) were leading at the half.
“I really didn’t know how my team was going to respond after that tough loss to Arcadia,” Phan said. “But they really came out ready to play and I’m happy with how we played [Friday].”
Likewise, Coach Dino Barbiera of Glendale (0-3-2, 0-3-1) found a lot of positives in his team’s performance.
“I thought that we played pretty well,” he said. “I moved up a few freshmen to varsity and they played well for us.”
The Burbank offense kept up a constant pressure on the Nitros, outshooting them, 12-2. However, it was the Bulldogs defense that clamped down and allowed Glendale very few scoring opportunities.
“We have some good athletes on our defense,” Phan said. “And that’s without probably our fastest defender [freshman Kaila Eugenio], who’s injured. Alyssa Meredith is playing real good defense for us, and she’s just a sophomore.”
Burbank began the match in dominating fashion, keeping the ball in Nitros territory for most of the first half.
Jennifer Seip scored on a corner kick in the eighth minute and Courtney Austin scored on a fine assist from Kristina Amela in the 18th minute to give the Bulldogs a 2-0 advantage.
Amela gave the Bulldogs their third goal when she converted a penalty kick in the 69th minute.
Glendale’s best opportunity of the match came in the 44th minute, but a free kick sailed over the crossbar.
