Indians making the Southeast Division first team were senior lineman Sebastian Valenzuela and senior running back Dominique Barnes. Making the second-team defense was junior linebacker Charlie Hosea.
It should have been Valenzuela’s second straight All-CIF selection, but a mix up last season denied the lineman the award.
“With what happened to him last year, it was great that he won the award this season,” said Burroughs Coach Keith Knoop of Valenzuela, who has verbally committed to Washington State University.
“Last year, it was a mistake by one of our coaches, and it wasn’t his fault at all.”
Knoop said Valenzuela took a recruiting trip to Washington State last week and will likely be headed to Pullman.
Barnes proved to be an offensive force for the Indians, racking up big numbers and breaking school records in the process.
Barnes — the Pacific League Offensive Player of the Year — rushed for 2,001 yards in 231 carries (8.7 yards a carry) and had 29 touchdowns. He is the first Indian to break the 2,000-yard mark and his career total of 3,078 puts him second on the all-time list behind Thomas Kyle (3,309).
He also set a single-game rushing record after gaining 304 yards against Burbank.
In addition, he scored 174 points, breaking the single-season record of 158 set in 2006 by Joe Wiggan. In 10 games, Barnes gained more than 200 yards five times and was in triple digits in every contest. During the season, he had scoring runs of 85, 68, 67 and 55 yards.
Hosea was a force on defense, leading the team with 131 tackles.
Burroughs (7-4) placed third in the Pacific League and lost in the first round of the Southeast Division playoffs to Rowland, 22-21.
