Burbank Unified School District Board Meeting Preview

ENROLLMENT PROJECTIONS

Trustees will hear a presentation about student enrollment projections for the next 10 years for the Burbank Unified School District.

Recent figures have shown that the district’s enrollment has not declined as much as officials had anticipated, although Thursday’s presentation will be the first projections made for the district by a professional firm.

A representative from DecisionInsite will give speak about his company’s findings.

Enrollment projections and trends will factor heavily into officials’ planning.

Much of the district’s finances depend on enrollment figures. Projections will also help officials plan out whether they need to increase or decrease staffing or facilities to accommodate a change in enrollment.

FUNDING FOR DEVELOPMENTS

Lori Ordway-Peck, assistant superintendent of business services, will report to the board on the district’s three-year projections for facilities improvement funds.

After three years of projects, including current projects at Providencia Elementary School and Monterey High School, the district will have a surplus of $6.8 million in a combination of facilities improvement bonds, Ordway-Peck said.

Construction at Providencia and Monterey is expected to be completed by September.

TEACHER CONTRACTS

The board will hear a presentation on a new contract agreement with the Burbank Teachers Assn., which the group ratified in December.

The contract would call for no increases in salary or benefit contributions from the district for the next year, rolling over language from the current agreement between teachers and the district.

Gabe Soumakian, assistant superintendent of human resources, will also discuss changes in the academic calendar brought about by the agreement.

WHAT TO EXPECT

The board is expected to approve the new agreement.
