Driver arrested after police chase

BURBANK — A motorist was arrested Monday night after California Highway Patrol officers tried to stop him in Santa Clarita for driving under the influence, but he instead led officers in a pursuit into the city, officials said.

The motorist, whose name was not released, was driving erratically Monday night on the Golden State (5) Freeway near Santa Clarita. Highway Patrol officers tried to stop him, but he kept driving on the freeway and headed into Burbank, Burbank Police Lt. William Berry said.

Burbank police saw the car, which matched the Highway Patrol’s suspect description, at a traffic signal near Bob Hope Airport, he said. Police drove behind the car, waited for the light to turn green and turned on their lights and sirens, which caused the motorist to speed away, Berry said.

They followed the motorist and called for their helicopter, which was in Pasadena, he said. When the helicopter arrived, police turned off their lights and sirens and continued to follow.

The motorist ran a red light at Hollywood Way and Jeffries Avenue, grazed the front of another vehicle and crashed into parked cars about 7 p.m., Berry said.

No one was injured in the crashes.

The motorist resisted arrest, and Burbank police tasered him, Berry said.

He was taken to a hospital after being tasered and was going to be taken to Burbank jail pending his hospital release, Berry said.
