Burbank Unified School District Meeting Wrap-up

March 21, 2009

FINANCIAL REPORT

Trustees voted to unanimously adopt the state’s mandated second interim report, a detailed financial plan that shows how the district will remain solvent over the next three academic years.

Instead of cutting 128 positions, officials have calculated that the district will now be able to remain solvent by losing only 79 jobs, through delaying textbook purchases and building maintenance, among other fund reorganization and provisions for savings.

FIGHT AT BURBANK HIGH

The Burbank Unified School District Board of Education heard clarifying comments from administrators about a fight at Burbank High School that drew several police units to the site.

The fight was not racially motivated and did not escalate into a “riot,” as had been rumored among the community, administrators said.

GYM FUNDS ARE APPROVED

The board unanimously approved an increase in payments to company PW Construction for a modernization project at Luther Burbank Middle School.

The district had budgeted to pay the contractor $11.5 million for its services at the school, but voted to add $129,862 to that total in order to replace the entire gymnasium floor at the school.
