On The Town:

La Providencia Guild glides into spring

April 08, 2009|By David Laurell

Lakeside Golf Club was transformed Saturday evening into the good ship S.S. Providencia as members and supporters of the La Providencia Guild of Childrens Hospital Los Angeles gathered for their 60th annual spring cotillion.

Presented as “Sailabration 2009,” Lakeside’s dining room looked more like the set of a nautical- themed Federico Fellini film as an eclectic cast of pirates, ship captains and sailors mingled with sea-goers inspired by everything from ancient Egypt and the Bible to classic television shows.

Invitees were given the option of donning formal attire or to come dressed as their favorite sea-inspired character. Looking like they came to Lakeside directly from Treasure Island or Penzance, Brooks and Ann Gardner joined John and Mary Jo Hjelmstrom in shivering some timbers as they arrived in the pirate finery.

Others who took on the persona of those associated with the sea included Max and Mary Christensen as millionaire socialites Lovey and Thurston Howell III of “Gilligan’s Island” fame, and Judy Pierce as the Queen of the Nile, and Bob and Marj Overstreet who, as Noah and his wife of the S.S. Ark, arrived with sheep and a pooper scooper in tow.

Always a well-attended event that raises funds for Childrens Hospital Los Angeles, this year’s cotillion will support the hospital’s Clinical Imaging Research and Technology Program that monitors children who are at risk of developing complications from various illnesses.

Presiding over Saturday’s gala were the guild’s officers, including President Sue Ann Gordon, First Vice President Sharon Terranova, Second Vice President Katherine Richards, Secretary Beverly Jean Davies, Treasurer Alicia Katz and Nancy Johnson, who handles the organization’s public relations.

Among those whose hard work helped stage the cotillion were the event’s chairwoman, Gene Marie Watson, coordinator, Judy Gragg, and their committee members that included Yvonne McMillan, Dolly Monte, Lurdes Munoz, Linda Hansen, Christine Smith, Lisa Murray, Tish Hawkins Sellers, Lynn Shelby, Sandi Call, Joan Chandler, Susie Hill, Linda Wilson, Darlene Lucas and Marilyn Teasley.
