On The Town:

Every summer the hills that surround Burbank come alive with the sound of music. Nestled in the Hollywood Hills to the south sits one of the most iconic amphitheaters in the world, while to the east, the Verdugo Mountains provide a hillside home for Burbank’s own outdoor music venue.

Whether at the Hollywood Bowl or the Starlight Bowl, most Burbankers harbor fond memories of family picnicking, a romantic sharing of a bottle of wine, or an evening of rocking out with friends at one of those melodious mountain bowls.

This past Thursday, music left the mountains for the flats of Burbank. Early evening picnicking served as the prelude for the John Burroughs High School Instrumental Music Assn.’s “Live! At the Burroughs Bowl.”

Under the direction of the school’s Director of Bands Tana Barnett Thursday’s concert was presented as a fundraiser to benefit the high school’s Concert Band, Combo, Jazz Ensemble, Symphonic Band and Wind Ensemble.

Staged in the campus quad, the evening’s performance featured music from “The Godfather,” “Spider-Man,” “The Dark Knight” and “Star Wars” accompanied by a cameo appearance by The Joker and a light saber duel between the villainous Darth Vader and Jedi Luke Skywalker.

More than 300 family members, friends and supporters enjoyed Handy Market tri-tip sandwiches before being entertained by Braddock Sandoval, Shannon Cain, Nick Stratton, Adam Atlas, Allison Pho, Stephanie Rosado-Nogal, Molly Cole, Jeffrey DeVall, Alex Hamilton, Diego Rivera, LeMoilneaux Bain, Brandon Shulkin, Anais Hayes, Meaghan Ryan, Mewael Debretsion, Christian Navarro, Jackson Wescott, Josh Bailey, Michael Jacobs, William Minniear, Jeremy Asuncion, Gabriel Casillas, Evan Jung, Connor Maddern, Jameson Ramos, Nicolas Aguilera, Theodore Roque, Marissa Massara, Russell Templet, Michael Jacobs, Ryan Catalasan and percussionists Brandon Combs and Jordan Curcuruto, who have been invited to attend prestigious jazz camps this summer.
