Dining Out:

Grill satisfies sports fans

May 30, 2009|By Tom Grove

There are times that I don’t want to eat at a fancy-schmancy restaurant. In fact, there are times that I want to simply eat a great burger or a nice sandwich, enjoy a sport on television and get excited and involved in the game — along with friends and family.

That’s why I loved The Clubhouse Grill at the DeBell Golf Club in Burbank. The Stough Canyon Nature Center is not far up the same road, for families interested in making a day of it.

There is an elevator that you can ride to the second floor where the restaurant is above the snack shop, but my family and I chose to take the stairs. Before we even made it to the top, we could hear the excited cheers and jeers of the patrons, who were watching the Lakers game.

We crossed the landing of the outdoor patio, which has a remarkable view of the beautiful golf course, and the surrounding trees and hills. We arrived just before sunset, and although The Clubhouse Grill has many full-length windows and sliding glass doors, none of them face toward the setting sun. The interior of The Clubhouse is somewhat small, but not at all cramped. The table spacing and the many windows, make this modernly rustic restaurant feel roomy and seem wide open.

Upon entering, we passed the bar that is immediately off to the left, which was also where most of the customers were watching the basketball game on the two plasma televisions. Over the boisterous Lakers fans, we were instructed to pick any table. Our waitress brought our menus, took our beverage orders and asked if we would like to try The Clubhouse’s Famous Garlic Bread ($5.95).

We did, and it was such a large portion that we didn’t need to order any other of their appetizers, such as Steak Bites ($10.95), Sautéed Mushrooms ($7.95), Halibut Fish Tacos ($8.95) or Chili Fries ($4.50). The garlic bread was an extremely tasty, full loaf of homemade sourdough bread (yes, they make their own bread!), cut in half and in one-inch slices, buttered, with a generous amount of fresh garlic baked in. The zest of the sourdough and the bite of the garlic made it a real pleasure to eat.

The Clubhouse serves breakfast from 6 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. every day. Traditional breakfast choices range from omelettes ($5.25 to $9.95), to pancakes and French toast ($5.25 to $7.95). Specials include the Breakfast Burrito ($6.50), Chorizo and Eggs ($6.50), and Corned Beef Hash ($6.95).
