Magallon earns All-American honor

Bellarmine-Jefferson High; baseball; Columbia Union College: The former Guards standout had a wildly successful season at Columbia Union College, located near the nation’s capital in Maryland.

A big contributor for the Pioneers this season, Magallon was named a 2009 United States Collegiate Athletic Assn. first-team All-American.

The Pioneers (25-20), ranked No. 2, tried to defend their national title in the USCAA National Championship in Newport News, Va. However, the team went 3-3 in the tournament and failed to repeat.

Magallon, a junior infielder, was second on the team with a .361 average (44 for 122). Along with his 44 hits, he also had 12 runs batted in, scored 32 runs, had five doubles and two home runs. In addition, he had an 18-game hitting streak during the season.

Magallon played for Cal State Dominguez Hills before suiting up for Glendale Community College last season.

BEN LEVITT

Burbank High; baseball; Chapman University: Levitt, a freshman pitcher, had a winning season and helped the Panthers get to the NCAA Division III championships.

Chapman (32-17) went 2-2 in the series and Levitt pitched two innings and picked up the win in the Panthers’ third game.

The Panthers had entered the postseason unranked and seeded No. 5 in the West Region playoffs. Chapman went 4-1 in the regionals and advanced to the finals in Appleton, Wis. for the fifth straight year. It finished third in the championships.

On the season, Levitt, a left-hander, had a 3-1 record in 16 appearances over 32 1/3 innings. In addition, he recorded 26 strikeouts and allowed 11 walks.

KIMMIE WHITE

Burroughs High, softball; Tennessee Tech: The former Indians standout enjoyed limited success in her first season in Division I.

White, a junior outfielder, batted .179 (10 for 56) in 31 games for the Golden Eagles. In addition, she had three RBI and drew five walks.

Tennessee Tech went 26-31 and was eliminated in the 2009 Ohio Valley Conference Tournament.
