Roll with it

June 06, 2009

We know, roller hockey is way cool, or at least, it was in the ’90s. Then came skateboarding, but at the risk of sounding prudish, even that appears to be waning. Now it appears BMX bikes have taken over the youth activity landscape, right before street parasailing takes hold, or extreme hand-walking.

The point is that the likely conversion of the roller hockey rink at Ralph Foy Park to accommodate the latest youth pastime should be greeted as just another turn of the page in the history book of sports fads. Kudos to parks officials for recognizing that, to keep teens actively engaged in broken fingers, bruised knees and all the other things that make growing up such a hardy experience, the city had to stay with the current.

Some die-hards inevitably get snagged along the way. Pay no mind, some of us never really got over the demise of roller skates, but we still moved on.
