Locals earn league honors

BASEBALL: The four area schools have 18 players recognized for fine season exploits.

The Guards were rewarded with five all-league selections.

Making the first team was senior shortstop/pitcher Jairo Trujillo, junior first baseman/pitcher Patrick Haney and sophomore shortstop Philip Diaz.

Haney led the team with a .458 average (33 for 72) and had 30 RBI and 19 runs scored and Diaz — an All-CIF pick last season — hit .311 (19 for 61) with 25 runs scored and 13 RBI.

Trujillo, a four-time all-league selection, two-time league player of the year and All-CIF pick in 2008, hit .303 (20 for 66) with 18 RBI and 17 runs scored.

Making the second team was senior outfielder Ryan Martinez and freshman infielder Matt Landini. Martinez batted .403 (25 for 62) with 27 runs scored, 14 RBI and 15 stolen bases and Landini batted .413 (26 for 63) with 25 runs scored and 19 RBI.

Although Coach Nick Rondin’s Pioneers (8-10, 3-5) placed fourth in the Liberty League, the team had three players make all-league.

Making the team was senior outfielder Anthony Lopez, senior catcher Jake Johnson and senior infielder Trevor Johnson.

While Trevor Johnson batted .393 (22 for 56) with 17 runs scored, 11 RBI and 14 stolen bases, Jake Johnson hit .365 (19 for 52) with 17 RBI and 13 runs scored and Lopez hit .327 (17 for 52) with 17 run scored, eight RBI, seven doubles and 16 stolen bases.
