Accidents snarl evening commute

A big rig that crashed into the center divider of the Golden State (5) Freeway just south of Hollywood Way at 2:11 p.m. Tuesday shut down all but one lane in either direction for more than two hours as crews worked to clear the mess.

Minor injuries were reported in the seven-car pileup that ensued, California Highway Patrol Officer David Porter said.

The California Department of Transportation reported that the semi-truck collided with a sedan as it hit the wall, initiating the chain of accidents.

Traffic was backed up for at least two miles in either direction as crews and ambulances responded to the scene. The truck reportedly jackknifed during the accident, damaging about 12 feet of the center concrete wall.

The accident was cleared from the roadway at about 4:30 p.m., and as of 8 p.m., the cause was still under investigation. Porter could not confirm how many of the drivers involved in the accident sustained minor injuries.

Shortly after the pileup was cleared, two other vehicles were involved in a minor accident near the original crash site, tripping up traffic once again, although it was moved quickly to the shoulder, Porter said.
