Bowman also worked as assistant superintendent of instructional services for six years and deputy superintendent for two years.
During his time as the district’s chief, he oversaw a period of expanding reserves, which have been instrumental in preventing extensive job cuts during the state’s current financial crisis.
Although some teachers have lost their jobs — board members approved the move in response to dramatic midyear state budget cuts — trustees have often credited Bowman’s leadership in helping to pave the way toward a 6% reserve fund that protected schools from the deep reductions facing other districts.
