Burbank Unified School District Board Meeting Wrap-up

June 20, 2009

LABOR NEGOTIATIONS

The Burbank Unified School District Board of Education held public hearings to discuss its proposals for topics to be negotiated with labor unions during upcoming contract talks.

The district plans to explore options for modifying salary and benefit commitments to employees during upcoming negotiations with the Burbank Teachers Assn. and the local chapter of the California School Employees Assn.

Trustees voted unanimously to accept the initial bargaining proposals for talks with the state association.

The teachers union did not submit a set of bargaining proposals, but the board accepted the district’s proposals for negotiations, which also included a proposal to explore modifications of class size.

California’s budget crisis and growing financial deficit have added to the district’s concerns over its costs, 85% of which are related to salary and benefit expenses, which are connected to student-to-teacher ratios.

WHAT IT MEANS

The board accepted the initial bargaining proposals, except for those from the teachers union, which has not submitted its requested items of discussion for contract negotiations.
