July 01, 2009

Burroughs’ Emily Tubert spending summer playing in prestigious events: There has been no relaxing this summer for Burroughs High girls’ golfer Emily Tubert.

Tubert, who will be a senior in the fall, is busy taking part in a variety of top tournaments throughout the country.

Two weeks ago, Tubert — who has verbally committed to the University of Arkansas — received a big honor when she was named to the 2009 Girls Junior Americas Cup Team.

She will be one of four girls to represent Southern California against teams from the United States, Alberta, British Columbia and Mexico.

The Girls Junior Americas Cup Matches will be held July 26-30 in Logan, Utah at the Logan Golf and Country Club.

The matches will feature 18 teams comprised of four players. Current LPGA players, Lorena Ochoa, Natalie Gulbis and Pat Hurst are some of the alumni who have played in the prestigious event.

The tournament, established in 1978, is a 54-hole competition with teams counting three scores and throwing out the team’s highest score. The event also includes a practice round, opening and closing ceremonies, a tournament banquet and a social event.

Tubert is currently taking part in the Rolex Tournament of Champions in Cape Girarduau, Mo. The event began Monday and concludes Saturday.

Past champions of the event include Phil Mickelson, David Duval, Charles Howell III, Emilee Klein, Grace Park, In-Bee Park, and Morgan Pressel. This year’s 144-player field includes athletes from 30 states and five foreign countries.

The Girls Division will feature 26 Rolex Junior All-Americans and 17 players ranked in the top 25 of the Polo Golf Rankings. Tubert is one of those All-Americans.

Last week, Tubert took part in the American Junior Golf Assn. Club-Corp Mission Hills Desert Junior at the Mission Hills Country Club-Dinah Shore Tournament Course in Rancho Mirage.

She placed seventh, shooting rounds of 73, 74, 73 for a 220. During the three rounds, Tubert had nine birdies and parred 32 holes.

Toluca Dodgers have perfect season: There was just no beating the Dodgers this past season in the Toluca Baseball Bronco Division.

During the season, the team of 11- and 12-year-olds had a perfect 17-0 record during the regular season. The squad continued its streak through the Toluca playoffs, capturing the championship.
