ARCADIA — There’s still two more Pacific League meets left to be run this season, but on Wednesday, Arcadia High took the first step toward possibly dethroning six-time girls’ league cross-country champion Crescenta Valley.

The Apaches enjoyed first-place finishes in both the girls’ and boys’ portions of the first league meet of the year at Arcadia Park, including the best overall finish in the girls’ race, where it edged second-place Crescenta Valley, 22-34, and third-place Burroughs, 21-40.

Entering Wednesday’s meet, the Falcons girls had won 14 straight league meets, with their last loss coming on Sept. 23, 2004 at Arcadia Park, when they lost to Arcadia and Glendale.

In the boys’ race, Arcadia beat second-place Burroughs, 20-38, and third-place Burbank, 17-44. Crescenta Valley was fourth-best overall, with a 16-47 head-to-head loss against the Apaches.

Sophomore Anthony Monroy was the top finisher for the Indians, placing third overall in 15 minutes 30.3 seconds to help Burroughs beat Burbank, 27-30, and the Falcons, 21-36.

“I felt kind of tired, it was a really tough race,” said Monroy, who came in 9.10 seconds behind winner Amar Moussa, a senior from Arcadia. “The heat really gets to me. I think we’re doing really good on working together and all.”

The rest of the Indians’ top finishers were sophomore Charlie Camacho, who was seventh in 16:04.75, senior David Campos (10th; 16:18.47), sophomore Alex Quispe (13th; 16:24) and Alex Martinez (23rd; 17:03.12).

“They were told to start off somewhat conservatively and then move up as the race went along,” Burroughs Coach John Peebles said. “With the heat as bad as it is, that strategy’s gonna pay off more often than not.”

Burbank’s Greg Dotson, a senior, finished sixth in 15:53.22. He was followed by junior teammate Jeremy Labertew in ninth in 16:11.66, senior Anthony Moumjian (16th; 16:31.56), junior Kevin Coronel (17th; 16:34.84) and Aaron Chen (19th; 16:44.03).

“We were hoping for second place today,” Burbank Coach Trevor Marcasaid. “We were in the mix with Burroughs, but our pack kind of separated and if they stayed tight, then we win. We’ve gotta be consistent. We’ve got to all be running well on the same day and stay together.”
