Tribe loses lead, game

FOOTBALL: St. Francis battles back to hand host Burroughs a 35-20 nonleague loss.

October 02, 2009|By Charles Rich

MEMORIAL FIELD — When the St. Francis High and Burroughs football teams get together each season, the matchup tends to bring out the best in both squads.

It’s been one-sided for the Golden Knights since the series began in 2001, but many of the games have been decided by a touchdown or less.

That point differential swelled in a big way Friday night.

St. Francis remained unbeaten in eight nonleague meetings against the Indians, as Golden Knights senior quarterback Justin Posthuma finished with 290 yards of total offense to help his squad post a 35-20 nonleague win at Memorial Field.

“It’s always a good matchup when these teams get together,” St. Francis Coach Jim Bonds said. “There are certain teams that you match up with evenly, and we’ve had a lot of three-to-four point games with Burroughs.”

It looked like Burroughs (1-2) would give St. Francis trouble once again. The Indians scored on their first drive when quarterback Lucas Yanez fired a 66-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Alexander Flemming to make it 7-0.

St. Francis caught a break to tie the score tied at 7 on the ensuing possession. St. Francis running back Christopher Cabrera fumbled at the 1-yard line, but Posthuma recovered the fumble and rolled across the goal line for the score.

Posthuma then gave the Golden Knights a 14-7 lead when he scored on a seven-yard run with 1:26 left in the first quarter. A Cabrera eight-yard run extended St. Francis’ lead to 21-7 with 9:13 remaining in the second quarter.

A possible turning point came early in the third quarter. On Burroughs’ first play from scrimmage, Yanez, who finished with 284 yards of total offense, threw an interception that was caught by defensive back Ryan Jenkins at the St. Francis 30-yard line and returned to the Burroughs 40.

Then Dietrich Riley, the reigning two-time All-Area Player of the Year, scored on the ensuing play on a 40-yard touchdown run.

“You make errors against a team like that and it’s tough,” Burroughs Coach Keith Knoop said. “We saw over there a great coaching staff that put their players in the right place.

“If anything, this will make us work harder for league. St. Francis has great speed and size. We’ll see that in league.”

A 20-yard touchdown run by Burroughs running back Tadeo Zuniga cut St. Francis’ lead to 28-14 with 7:35 left in the third quarter.

Posthuma, who completed 10 of 21 passes for 184 yards, then scored on a one-yard sneak to make it 35-14 with 4:48 remaining in the third quarter.

Burroughs closed out the scoring with 19 seconds left in the game on a 15-yard pass from Yanez to Flemming.

Yanez had 76 yards rushing in 14 carries.
