Decades of patronage from the local studios revealed its grandest form this week with the introduction of the new Roy and Patricia Disney Family Cancer Center.

As the first comprehensive cancer center in the San Fernando Valley, it is surely the crowning jewel for the Providence St. Joseph Medical Center — especially with a $36-million price tag.

Amid all the pomp and circumstance that typically comes with opening a building of this scope and size, it might be easy to forget the long history the local studios have had in supporting St. Joseph.

From the executives who’ve populated the board over the years, to the tens of millions poured into infrastructure and programming, studio support of the hospital campus cannot be overstated.

Of course, they certainly tried to outdo themselves here, an exclamation point that will no doubt help blunt the impact of those who receive cancer diagnoses for years to come.

Props should also be paid to the doctors and administrators who started hashing out their dream for a comprehensive cancer treatment center 25 years ago. To hold on to and pursue that vision for that long is no small capital feat, no matter the measure.
