Teacher won’t post bail

The former Jordan Middle School teacher who turned herself in for having sex with a 14-year-old student was transferred Thursday to a Los Angeles County jail in Lynwood, authorities said.

Amy Beck, the 33-year-old Burbank Unified English and social science teacher, does not intend to post $175,000 bail as she continues to work with investigators, said her attorney, Michael Williamson.

“My client is not making any admissions,” he said. “She’s voluntarily assisting and cooperating with the Burbank Police Department.”

A Los Angeles Superior Court judge postponed Beck’s arraignment Wednesday, allowing Williamson more time to review the evidence against her, he said. Beck was charged with four counts of unlawful sex with a minor and one count of oral copulation with a minor.

Beck appeared in a Burbank courtroom Wednesday morning in a long-sleeved navy blue sweater and pants while Superior Court Judge Patrick Hegarty approved postponing her arraignment to March 25.

Her eyes were fixed on the ground throughout the proceeding as she sat, hands bound, in the jury box.

“My client wanted to discuss the issues with the Burbank Police Department, and that’s all I can say,” Williamson said.

With Williamson in tow, Beck surrendered to police Monday afternoon for having sex with the boy during a six-month period in 2009, police said. Beck is cooperating with investigators, Burbank Police Sgt. Robert Quesada said.

Burbank Unified officials said Beck submitted a short resignation letter March 5. School officials described it as a two- or three-sentence note that said she was resigning immediately.

Williamson said Beck, also a Burbank resident, did not feel fit to work until the situation was resolved.

He said Friday that Beck is adjusting to prison life, and he’s scheduled to meet with the district attorney’s office next week to discuss the case.

The Los Angeles County district attorney’s office could not comment until Beck is arraigned, a spokeswoman said.

Beck is married and has children at Roosevelt Elementary School, school parents said. Her husband is a Los Angeles Police Department officer, police said.

Parent Teacher Assn. representatives at Roosevelt and Jordan declined to comment.

Burbank Unified officials said staff members were emotionally drained, but working to maintain a secure environment for everyone.
