Providence wins first two games of the year

Providence 19, Liberty Christian 9: The Pioneers breezed to an easy nonleague victory Thursday at Pote Field in Griffith Park.

It was the second straight win for Providence (2-3).

Devin Pugliese, Anthony Galvan and Arman Krapoyan each had three hits for the Pioneers.

The game went seven innings and was not halted despite the Pioneers meeting the 10-run mercy rule standard.

Providence 3, L.A. Lutheran 1: The Pioneers recorded their first win of the season Wednesday in the nonleague game at Pote Field in Griffith Park.


With the score tied at 1 in the bottom of the sixth inning, Devin Pugliese singled and stole second. He was then bunted to third and scored on a squeeze by Oscar Urzun.

The Pioneers pushed across another run on an error.

Pugliese had two hits and went six innings on the hill to record the win. Anthony Galvan got the save.

Burbank in the Tucson Conquistadors Classic: The Bulldogs have played well in the event at the Kino Sports Complex in Tucson, reaching the semifinals.

In the semifinals Thursday, Burbank fell to No. 1-seeded Yucaipa, 6-4.

Stanford-bound Lonnie Kauppila went two for three with a triple and was hit by a pitch. Brandon Zepeda went two for four with a triple and Dylan Mersola and David Goldberg had singles.

On Wednesday, Burbank (3-4) defeated Douglas (Arizona), 10-7. The game was called in the sixth inning because of the “Drop Dead” rule after a 2 1/2 -hour time limit.

Pitcher Daniel Starkand got the win, going 6 1/3 innings and recording four strikeouts.

Kauppila paced the offense, going three for four with a double. In addition, he had three stolen bases, including a swipe of home. David Goldberg had a single and triple, two runs batted in and scored two runs and Brandon Zepeda and David Goldberg both had triples.

Burbank also defeated Redlands East Valley, 3-1, on Tuesday.

Greg Koll hit a sacrifice fly to deep center field to score the go-ahead run. The next batter, Starkand, hit a sacrifice fly to left field to score the third run

Burroughs in the Tucson Conquistadors Classic: The Indians went 1-3 in the event played at the Kino Sports Complex in Tucson.

Burroughs (3-5) defeated Marana (Arizona), 11-5, Friday, fell to Catalina (Arizona), 9-8, Thursday, lost to Sunnyside (Arizona), 9-3, Wednesday and lost to Canyon del Oro (Arizona), 5-1, on Tuesday.

In the win, Jimmy Kenney, Kasey Kenney and Hector Gonzalez had three hits each.

Jimmy Kenney was two for two against Canyon del Oro and also had two hits against Sunnyside.

Andrew Spraker was three for four and Christian Garcia was two for two against Catalina.



Village Christian 3, Newbury Park 2 (10 innings): Burbank resident Emily Seidel drove in Maddi Velasquez in the 10th inning to lift the Crusaders to a nonleague win Tuesday.

Seidel, who is headed to the University of Nevada Reno, had three hits and drove in two runs.
