May 12, 2010

The Foothill Civitan Club of Burbank staged its 29th annual luncheon and fashion show under the theme of “Pretty As A Picture” in the Starlight Room at the Castaway Saturday.

Chaired by Karen Hubbard who was assisted by committee members including Jenice McGlynn, Joanne Adams, Marge Llanusa, Dee Dee Ruhlow and Sandy Lucas, the event was hosted by Janet Jordan. Others whose work and presence helped make the day a success were Jean and John Stroud, Shirley Witt, Carol Nicholson, Jordan, Mary Bernier, Sandie Shapiro, Sandy Dennis, and Deanna Pettersen.

Chartered in 1977 as Chapter 2461, the Foothill Civitan Club raises funds for local and national organizations.

Over the years they have underwritten the cost of three Canine Companions for Independence assistance dogs, and are regular supporters of Civitan International’s Research Center, a research and treatment facility for developmental disabilities on University of Alabama in Birmingham campus.

Proceeds from this year’s fashion show will enable the organization to continue their support of scholarships at local Burbank high schools, continued support of Families of Spinal Muscular Atrophy, contributions to the Burbank Salvation Army’s various programs, and Hands Across the Battlefield.

The organization also sponsors three families in the Burbank Coordinating Council’s Holiday Basket Program. They also support the annual Girls Ponytail Jamboree, the Burbank Police Department’s K-9 Unit, the Burbank Center for the Retarded (BCR “a place to grow,”) and Sunland’s Tierra Del Sol, a learning facility for individuals with disabilities.

At Saturday’s event, more than 200 members and guests had the opportunity to peruse a silent auction coordinated by Bernier, prior to lunch and the fashion show.

To the music of Jim Roope, the afternoon’s main event saw Civitan members and special guests work the catwalk showcasing summer styles. Among those modeling fashions provided by Holiday Hats and Gowns of Montrose were Millie Montante, Kathie Kenney, Judy Torres, Ann Marie Coppen, Liz Kenney, Stacy and Shannon Hubbard, Elaine Paonessa, Janet and Beverlee Broggie, and special guest California Civitan Fifth District Lt. Gov. Linda Colley.

Others whose support assisted the Civitans in their philanthropic fundraising efforts were Mary Jo Hjelmstrom, Donna Wade, Jan Loporchio, Mary Lou Wagner, Sharon Terranova, Tiffany and Makenna Bernier, Dave and Rose Marie Holland, Shari Epstein, Morey Goodstein, Barbara Goldsmith, Nancy Koch, Kathy Shea, Lorelei Finch, Dennis and Bonita Arnold, Milton and Ruth Berman, Camilla Griggs, Judy Henry, Dee Dee Howard, Suzanne Humphries, Joni Kilgore, Barbara Mayhew, Stephanie McGee, Betsy McLaughlin, Joan Newboro, Carol and Bob Nicholson, Deanna Pettersen, Sandra Richetts, and Mary Spilman.
