Historical society thanks supporters

The board of directors for the Burbank Historical Society thanked their members for their support with an old-fashioned picnic on May 2 on the grounds of the Gordon R. Howard Museum.

Outside on the patio, members lined up for snow cones and popcorn from the antique vending machines. Wienerschnitzel brought its concession truck and employees handed out hot dogs.

Entertainment was by From the Top whose four members sang barbershop-style harmony.

Past president Les Rosenberg and his wife, Elaine, are docents and have been members for 20 years.

“We’re happy to have so many members come to our Member Appreciation Day because it’s their donations every year, that keep the museum growing,” Les Rosenberg said.

Louise Penn was a member long before she became a museum docent, she said.

“I enjoy meeting people and watching their enthusiasm,” Penn added.

She has donated several items to the museum including her grandmother’s beaded handbag made back in the 1800s, her Raggedy Ann dolls and several western items form her late husband Leonard Penn who was an actor in the western films.

Lorraine White, a docent for more than 25 years and past president of the board, said her favorite exhibit at the museum is the doll collection.

“I enjoy being a docent and sharing the history of Burbank with visitors,” she said.

Mayor Anja Reinke, attended the event and recognized society volunteers for their dedication.

“Thank you for preserving the past, maintaining the present and looking toward the future,” she said.

Some of Reinke’s favorite items in the museum are the veterans exhibits, she said.

“I love to see real people’s real things from the past,” she said. “When you look at those possessions, it makes them come to life.”

Councilman Jeff Talamantes came out to show his support.

“This is exciting,” he said. “This is what Burbank is all about volunteering and community.”
