Shooting suspect to be arraigned

July 06, 2010|By Chloe Mayer

A 30-year-old homeless man who police say shot two officers last week in front of a Burbank Kmart is scheduled to be arraigned Wednesday on attempted murder charges.

The man, Jamie Willard, is currently being held in lieu of $1-million bail at the Los Angeles County Jail after being treated for injuries he sustained during his arrest on Friday. Police released his identity in a statement issued Tuesday morning.

The Burbank police officer who was shot multiple times in the chest outside the store on San Fernando Boulevard has been released from the hospital and is recovering at home, according the police department. He was protected by his bullet proof vest, although a bullet fragment is still lodged in his leg.

The second officer – who joined the force 18 months ago – has had two surgeries for a gunshot wound to his hand and remains in hospital, according to the police department.

Willard, of Gresham, Oregon, had been detained by Kmart security when police officers arrived outside the store, authorities said. Though handcuffed, he reportedly took one of the officers' guns while being transferred into their custody, and a struggle ensued before the shots were fired.
