Wine named in honor of legendary rocker

August 11, 2010

A limited edition wine will be released Sunday in honor of Burbank native Randy Rhoads, who was the lead guitarist for Ozzy Osbourne and Quiet Riot before he was killed in a plane crash while on tour with Osbourne in 1982.

The Rhoads special edition 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon will be unveiled during a tasting party from noon to 6 p.m. Sunday at the D'Argenzio Winery in Burbank, home to the Rhoads and D'Argenzio families.

The special edition wine is a way to honor her brother's legacy, music and life, said Kathryn Rhoads D'Argenzio.

"He grew up here and is still very revered in the music industry," she said. "This is something I can do to keep his memory alive."

A major portion of the proceeds from the wine sales will go to the Randy Rhoads Charitable Trust, which was created by his mother, Delores Rhoads, who gives scholarships to students studying classical guitar at UCLA and Cal State Northridge.

"His goal was to write and play classical guitar music," his sister said.

This wine is bottled and produced in Sonoma County in Northern California. The limited edition wine will be available only at the Santa Rosa winery and Burbank tasting rooms and also through the website dargenziowine.com.
