Football preview: Bell-Jeff vs. Malibu

September 24, 2010

BELL-JEFF VS. MALIBU

WHEN: 1 p.m. today.

WHERE: Malibu High.

RECORDS: The Guards and the Sharks are both 1-2.

LAST WEEK: Bell-Jeff lost to Roasmond, 15-12; Malibu lost to St. Monica, 21-13.

OUTLOOK: The Guards will be looking to bounce back after suffering a nonleague loss last week. In the game, Bell-Jeff had the lead late, however, it gave up a late touchdown to go down to defeat. The Guards and Coach Rolando Aguirre are still tinkering with the team's offense. Last week, Aguirre had Micah Shirley taking the snaps at quarterback and running the offense. Shirley is a versatile athlete that has seen time at wide receiver and running back. At running back, he has 33 carries for 366 yards and a touchdown. As a receiver he has four catches for 104 yards and two touchdowns. In addition, as a cornerback he is Bell-Jeff's leading tackler with 39, averaging 13 a game. The Guards might even unveil a new offensive wrinkle for the Sharks. The Bell-Jeff offense is averaging 16.7 points a game. For Malibu — which averages just 11.3 points a contest — it runs an offense in which it spreads things around. The team has a solid running back in Matt Mason, who has 48 carries for 208 yards and a touchdown. Chris Konkol was the Sharks' quarterback in the first two games, completing 17 of 31 passes for 239 yards and one touchdown. Konkol also threw five interceptions. He didn't play in the loss to St. Monica. Brennan Cassone played quarterback in last week's loss, completing seven of 20 passes for 172 yards, one touchdown and one interception. Cassone is also the team's leading receiver (seven for 160 yards and one touchdown). Last year's game between the schools was close, as the Guards won, 20-18.

SOMETHING INTERESTING: The Guards still have two nonleague games — against Riverside Christian on Oct. 2 and Mountain View on Oct. 9 — before opening Santa Fe League play Oct. 16 against St. Anthony.
