BELL-JEFF VS. St. ANTHONY
WHEN: 7 p.m. today.
WHERE: Memorial Field (Burroughs High).
RECORDS: The Guards and Saint are both 2-4.
LAST WEEK: Bell-Jeff lost to Mountain View, 49-21; St. Anthony lost to California City, 37-14.
OUTLOOK: The opening Santa Fe League game for both teams will be a battle of squads that have struggled in recent weeks. The Saints come in to the contest on a three-game losing streak and the Guards have lost their last two contests. The Bell-Jeff defense hasn't fared very well the last two weeks, as the unit has given up 604 rushing yards to two running backs alone in nonleague losses to Riverside Christian and Mountain View. The Guards' offense has also had its problems at times, as it averages a league-low 21.7 points a game. St. Anthony isn't too far behind, scoring an average of 23.3 points a game. The Saints have showed they can move the ball on the ground, as Thomas Brown has carried the ball 86 times for 554 yards and three touchdowns. Teammate Donnie Torres has 94 carries for 495 yards and nine touchdowns. If the Guards can stop the Saints' ground attack, they might have a chance at getting a victory. That's because the St. Anthony passing game has been weak this season, as it's quarterbacks have thrown for just 242 yards in five games. They also have six touchdowns and five interceptions. Bell-Jeff, on the other hand, averages more than 129 yards passing a game. The Guards have also had to deal with their share of injuries to key players this season.
