MVP basketball camp scheduled

Boys' and girls' basketball players who will be in fifth through eighth grades in September will get a chance to take part in the

10th annual MVP Summer Basketball Camp.

The camp, sponsored by the Burbank Park, Recreation and Community Services Dept., will have two sessions. The first session is a basic skills camp for fifth-seventh graders from 9 a.m.-noon Dec 20-22. The second session is for more advanced players (fifth-eighth grades), and that will be held from 9 a.m.-noon Dec. 27-29. Both sessions will take place at McCambridge Recreation Center (1515 N. Glenoaks Blvd.).


In the basic camp, players will work on their skills and there will be an emphasis on basic aspects of the game. The second session is for players who have at least three years experience playing organized basketball, and there will be more of an emphasis on advanced skills.

The cost is $50. And the deadline to register is Dec. 17. Athletes can signup at Verdugo Recreation Center or McCambridge.

The event is run by longtime park and rec, Catholic Youth Organization and high school Coach Mike Graceffo. Graceffo has almost 30 years coaching experience, and was an instructor at camps run by Michael Jordan and B.J. Armstrong in Chicago and Santa Barbara.

Graceffo also coached in the American Roundball Corp. and has won championships at many levels.

Along with learning basketball fundamentals and skills, participants will receive a profile card outlining a player's

strengths and weaknesses, a self-help booklet, a gym bag, a T-shirt and a certificate of participation.

Athletes will play several pickup games, participate in basketball drills, take part in free throw and shooting contests, watch

basketball videos and get a chance to win prizes. There will also be speakers addressing the athletes.

Burroughs alumni hoop games

The Burroughs High basketball programs will be holding their annual alumni games Thursday in the school's large gym. The Indians' varsity teams will be taking on teams of Burroughs alumni/

The girls' game will begin at 6 p.m. and the boys' game will follow at 7:30 p.m.
