Pioneer teams get wins

BOYS' SOCCER

Providence 4, Bellarmine-Jefferson 1: The Pioneers received two goals from Alec Adney Wednesday in a nonleague win against their cross-town rival at Ferraro Fields.

Senior goalkeeper Osbaldo Lara helped naturalize the Guards' offense with a number of saves.

Anto Boghokian and Sarkis Shaginian also scored goals for Providence.

Burroughs 8, Sherman Oaks Notre Dame 0: The Indians had an easy time recording the nonleague victory Wednesday on the Road

Joan Alvarez paced the Indians (2-0) with two goals. Burroughs also received goals from Steven Munoz, Johnny Garcia, Angelo Escalante, Miguel Mundo, Alex Escalante and Mauricio Cortes.

GIRLS' SOCCER

Providence 1, Bellarmine-Jefferson 0: Lauren Markey scored the lone goal of the match Wednesday to lead the Pioneers to a nonleague win at Ferraro Fields.

Providence goalkeeper Carlee Renteria recorded the shutout.

Burroughs 1, Canyon 1: The Indians were able to hang on in a nonleague stalemate Wednesday in a nonleague match at Memorial Field.

The Indians scored in the first 18 seconds when defender Brooke Hazzard crossed the ball to outside midfielder Tatiana Rizzotti, who advanced the ball 20 yards up the left sideline before she crossed the ball to a charging Amy Lopez. Lopez beat both a Canyon defender and the Canyon goalie for the score.

Canyon scored in the last two minutes of the contest.

The Indians' defense played well, led by Haley O'Brien, along with Hallie White, Hazzard, Ashley Caro, and freshman Delaney O'Brien. Goalkeeper Alexis Mendias also had a solid match.

Daniela Salinas, Maria Gomez and Jose Castellon also played well for Burroughs (0-1-2).

GIRLS' BASKETBALL

Providence in Viewpoint Tournament: The Pioneers have played well in the event and will take on Milken Community at 8 p.m. Saturday in the championship game.

Providence (4-1) finished pool-play undefeated with a 50-23 win against Crossroads Thursday.

The Pioneers outscored the Roadrunners, 26-10, in the first half.

Rita Khatchadourian paced the Pioneers with 11 points

On Wednesday, Ana Solis stepped up to pour in 20 points to pace the Pioneers to a 53-42 win against St. Genevieve.

Solis also had eight steals and six rebounds. Khatchadourian and Bea Benedicto chipped in 12 points each.
