Burbank gets rivalry sweep

BURBANK HIGH — It is a busy week for the Burbank High and Burroughs track and field teams.

Not only did the squads have to go against one another in their annual rivalry meet Tuesday, but the Indians and Bulldogs — along with the rest of the league — will be back in action Friday for the Pacific League preliminaries at Arcadia High.

"The only other way to do it would be to run the prelims and finals in the same week," Burroughs Coach John Peebles said.

Looking for momentum heading into Friday's meet, the Bulldogs broke some longstanding streaks by sweeping the Indians in Tuesday's event at Burbank High.

While the Bulldogs boys' posted an 82-54 victory, the host girls secured a 74-62 win.

"I know in the girls this is the first time we beat them since 2006," Burbank Coach Darin Wolf said. "And I went as far back at 2003 and we haven't won in boys during that span. So, it was a good day for all of our teams."

On the boys' side, Burroughs was without a few key athletes. Most notably absent was junior Anthony Monroy, a two time All-Area Boys' Cross-Country Runner of the Year who advanced to the Masters Meet in the 3,200 last season. Peebles said Monroy has been nursing a foot injury.

"He was able to run for the first time in a couple of weeks [Tuesday]," Peebles said. "We just want to have him ready by next week [for the league finals]."

The Burbank boys received a fine meet performance from Jose Rodriguez, who had a hand in three victories. Along with winning the 100 in 11.72 seconds, he also took the 200 in 24.37 and teamed up with Jason Salomon, Cameron Head and Teddy Arlington to win the 4x100 relay in 46.12.

The Bulldogs also received a double win from freshman Isaiah Amos, who placed first in the 800 (1:59.14) and the 1,600 (4:30.60), and Haibert Sarkissian, who won the high jump (5 feet 8) and the triple jump (40-1/4).

"He can really run any race," Burbank distance Coach Trevor Marca said of Amos. "But we will concentrate on the 800 in league, so hopefully he'll be able to make it to CIF."

The Bulldogs were also helped out by wins in the shot put (Bruce Lee; 41-0), discus (Brandon Weiss; 120-7), 3,200 (Bernie Corea; 10:08.46) and the long jump (Alex Boze; 19-4).

Burroughs had a double winner in Alejandro Rosas, who was victorious in the 110 hurdles (15.97) and the 300 hurdles (42.51).
